Mentoring for Senior Leadership at Excalibur

No large scale comprehensive organizational, system or process improvement can be effective without the informed, active and sustained leadership and continuous participation of the senior executives of the organization. The time demands on the Senior Leadership Team can be significant. In order for this time to be used effectively, those Leaders must first gain an understanding of the potential of a comprehensive

Lean Sigma System and their role in the implementation process. Executives must then understand the progression and interrelationships of Lean System Elements. They must be able to recognize which Lean System Elements are appropriate for a particular process problem so that they can appropriately allocate and align necessary resources and support.

Excalibur recognizes the critical role the Senior Leadership Team plays in the long term success of the transformation of their health system. Excalibur provides education and mentoring in organizational improvement which is specific to each member of the Senior Leadership Team and to Executive Board Members.

Excalibur’s Consulting Team includes several retired senior hospital executives who have a comprehensive education and experience in LEAN Systems, Six Sigma, Quality and organizational change.

Our practice is aligned with other pioneers in healthcare leadership including Quint Studer, author of Hardwiring Excellenceand Fred Lee, author of If Disney Ran Your Hospital”.

The real benefits [of Lean Systems] are known by leaders who understand that the significant, meaningful improvements come from the basic understanding of flow - they don't originate in the board room.
“[LEAN Systems] is a concept not understood in North America because we are impatient. It is "pick and shovel" work, not particularly fashionable or flashy. Organizations "dabble" in the process. The real benefits are known by leaders who understand that the significant, meaningful improvements come from the basic understanding of flow - they don't originate in the board room. To get started leaders must make a leap of faith and first believe that the competitive advantage to be gained in the marketplace comes from unleashing the creativity of people and not from promoting technology.”

"The first time they [Excalibur] attended one of our Board meetings, one of their consultants made a comment that literally caused several of my Executive Team Members to “gasp”. When after the meeting several of our Med Chiefs made similar comments to me about how “it was time we started to speak openly and honestly”, I began to appreciate Excalibur’s advice about leading by example. They just had.".

I recall dropping into one of Excalibur’s [Lean Certification] seminars for our Directors and Managers. The Instructor had read to the class a quote by Machiavelli and followed up with, “Always ask for exactly what you need. The answer may be ‘No’, but remember, ‘No’ expires after 24 hours and then ask again”. I appreciate their professionalism AND that they have a sense of humor. It’s a good day any day they’re in our building.
